Looking Back at Fall

This Fall was pretty busy at the garden. The Green Team did an amazing job composting, tidying, and getting the garden ready for winter. 5th grade S.T.E.A.M had a harvest celebration, cooked butternut squash pancakes with squash from our garden, and dyed yarn with garden plants, and 4th grade S.T.E.A.M planted a three sisters garden, cooked native popcorn, dissected beans, and used science tools to observe pumpkins. We still have a lot of work to do over the winter building cold frames, new beds, and repairing our old ones, but, for now let's relax and enjoy these pictures of another fantastic season at the P.S. 14 Fairview Garden. *Our new background picture was taken by John Cardenas- 5th Grade Green Team member.

Final Harvest and Daffodil Bulbs

It is now January and winter is officially here. But, we certainly had a mild December and our Student Green Team was able to plant many daffodil bulbs in the front yard of the school as well as make one last harvest in the teaching garden.

Welcome to the P.S. 14 Garden Club

The P.S. 14 Garden Club began last fall as a few teachers and paraprofessionals who wanted to provide students with a deep connection to the natural environment and to their food.  We began by attending Grow to Learn and Green thumb workshops and recruiting parent volunteers.  By November, the first student after school garden club were sowing indoor seedlings and drafting garden plans.  In March, teachers and parents built the first raised beds and come May, with the student gardeners, planted a variety of vegetables and herbs.  There was a culminating, “Music in the Garden”  harvest celebration in collaboration with the music and art departments that included a mural, special education students playing recorder to the plants, and garden club members of all ages harvesting the fruits of their labors.  The celebration continued in the cafeteria where mini-salads were made for all to taste. Here are some highlights of our first incredible year.
